I've decided to try doing a speedpaint every day for practice, but this isn't the first time I've come up with this idea, so I'm not sure how long it'll last. You can find the ones that I don't upload here on my new art blog:
[link]This is number one, a frog sitting on a leaf. I used a wonderful photograph by ~
hatestock for reference:
[link]This took me about an hour and 45 minutes, start to finish.
I notice the eye is smaller and the bumps on the frog's skin are more regular than on the ref, but they don't detract much. I think the leaf teaxtures under it should be sharper, it looks like it's floating a bit.
The frog's skin and feet must have been the biggest challenge; but it looks moist and rubbery, those feet are amazing. It looks like a baby frog, like the tiny ones that hop over my street at dusk, risking being trampled or driven on. They are so tiny and so many, you can barely see them, or avoid walking on them.
Firstly, this is a really great piece. In comparison with the ref piece I think you've improved the composition well and did a great job replicating the leaf. The detail of the frog's skin and feet is beautiful and very appealing to the eye. Considering proportions, the eye is slightly smaller than in the photo, and the back leg also. Though I admit I had looked at the piece for several minutes before noticing and don't think it detracts from the piece.
Depending on the look you were going for, I think there could be a slightly greater contrast between the beige-golden tones of the frog and the deep greens to help make the image "pop" a little more. However, I admit the ref photo is slightly burnt out and this perhaps makes your piece better for recovering the lost colour.
All in all, a great piece and I think you definitely have a lot of potential just taking a peek at your gallery. Hope the critique was okay
